Why every teacher needs a classroom management philosophy

The philosophy of classroom management is one of the most important things to consider before you start teaching.  Even if you know all the material you need to teach, students can’t learn it from you if you don’t have the right environment for them to learn it in.  Institutions should set classroom management philosophy examples by the institution that you work at.  The institution should also set a classroom philosophy statement which sets a goal for all instructors at the institution to follow.

A classroom management statement is most effective when it is simple but thorough.  Not only should the teachers know the statement but the students should know it too. If a student doesn’t know how their teacher expects them to act then they will act how they do everywhere else.

Each instructor should take the institution philosophy statement and turn it into a classroom management philosophy statement for just their class.  Instructors can print this statement out and make each student and parent sign a copy.  This gives instructors something to show students should they start to break the rules and policies of the classroom.  When you can show them that they broke their agreement they are a lot more likely to understand.

In order to have a classroom where students can learn it is important to make sure that the environment is safe, comfortable, and the students can feel safe to learn.  For example, if you try to have your students learn in a plain white classroom they will feel less stimulated and only take in parts of what you are attempting to teach them.  With all the negative outside influence that kids are taking in the modern world it is not a surprise that students need to feel safe.  Students need to know that gangs, home life, and bullying will all stay outside of the classroom.  If they constantly have a guard up they won’t ask questions or be able to fully take in the material.

The philosophy of classroom management and discipline also sets out that students should know what disciplinary measures they will receive for what infractions.  This should be covered in the beginning of the year.  If a student knows that after so many times of doing something there won’t be action taken then they will continue doing as they have always done.

Each and every teacher plays the role of not just instructor but of leader.  Teachers are guides to their students as they grow up.  There are three main different styles of leadership: top down leadership, participative leadership, and delegative leader.Classroom management philosophy

The top down leader is the one who emphasizes his role as the leader.  He makes decisions and those that follow him must complete his instructions.  If a situation requires quick action such as an emergency then top down leadership works perfectly.  There is no arguing a decision made in this leadership style.

Participative leaders use the whole team, or classroom’s, input to develop a decision.  Under this style of leadership the leader takes a step back and lets the group decide for themselves what to do.  This enables students to learn for themselves and in younger education where students must develop themselves through touch, sight, smell, and their other senses, this is the best leadership style.  This leadership style can take a lot of time to work with because a community decision must be reached.

The last leadership style is delegative leader.  This leader does almost no leadership decisions at all.  They would only make a decision if there was an emergency or something needed to be done right then and there.  Instead of making the decisions for the whole group, the delegative leader allows each member to work by themselves.  This method is most easily deployed when you are working with a group of experts.  The leader plays the role of connecting the various followers so that they know what all branches are doing.

Decide which one of these leadership styles you think will benefit your classroom the most and incorporate it into your classroom plans.

When it comes to the management of classrooms there are each style has its own school of philosophy, each instructor runs their classroom utilizing their own methods.  Every classroom must at least have a solid management philosophy and strive to make students feel comfortable in the classroom.  Remember the small steps such as decorating your classroom can go a long way.  If you want to know more about classroom philosophy take a philosophy class today and learn how to help your students learn more and retain it longer..
